Building a Presence for
Science in Ohio
The following goals have been
established for BaP Ohio:
* To create and maintain a
network of Key Leaders in the state and Points of Contact in every school
in Ohio;
* To advocate and promote standards-based science teaching and learning
throughout Ohio;
* To share information about professional development opportunities that
promote and enhance teacher quality;
* To implement and encourage the use of interactive communication tools,
such as listservs and Web sites to enhance the sharing of information.
* To increase vertical communication among K-16 science educators.
* To ensure every student has the opportunity to learn from a qualified
teacher.
How is the Network Designed?

NSTA continues to support the
BaP program across the US. A database is maintained for each state in
the system; the database includes a listing of every school in the state
and the Key Leaders and Points of Contact who have been joined the network.
NSTA also sends an eBlast once a month (on the 3rd Thursday) to all BaP
participants in every state.
The State Coordinator in each state may communicate with other State Coordinators,
and does share information within the state about opportunities and issues
in science education at the state and national level . In Ohio the State
Coordinator sends an eBlast twice a month (on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays)
to the Key Leaders and Points of Contact. Each Key Leader may send an
eBlast with information about local events once a month as well. Points
of Contact share the information with other teachers of science in their
own schools.
The network is designed for two-way communication, so Points of Contact
may use the system to communicate with other points of Contact in their
own cluster, with their Key Leader, or with the State Coordinator. Key
Leaders may network with each other, or with the State Coordinator.
Not shown in the graphic are State Partners (who may support the program
financially and do provide information to the State Coordinator for eBlasts),
members of the Steering Committee (which oversees and governs the program
in Ohio), and the Science Education Council of Ohio (SECO) (which is the
state chapter of NSTA, and which is providing support and funding for
Key Leader training workshops and materials).
